Trademark Statistics – Domestic and Foreign Filings (source: WIPO)

A very interesting piece of information is the differences between the amount of domestic and foreign trademark filings in a specific country. Developing countries are usually charactatizes by a large number of incoming filings by international companies, while the domestic companies are still less aware of the importance of IP protection.

From a business perspective, if we will know that a specific country receives much more application than it sends, it means that this country is well established for foreign brands. We can therefore advice our clients that, for example, getting a new brand into the Irish or the Swiss market is much easier than branding in Japan, Turkey or even Italy!

The first graph here shows the through the years, there was no significant change in the breakdown between domestic and foreign filings.
